Built on the Rock

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25

Storms will come. It’s a fact of life. We may go through long periods of perfect weather with no hint of rain, but the rain will eventually fall. The wind will blow. The lightning will strike. That’s as sure a thing as the sun coming up each day.

How we weather the storms depends entirely on our foundation. Just as a house that is built upon sand will buckle and fall during a great storm (see the next two verses of Matthew 7), if our faith is not in something greater than fair weather, we will fall. Hard. If my faith depends on life being all sun and no clouds, I’ve got a problem. Because the rain will come.

My faith is the God of the universe, the Great I AM, the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and Omega, the King of the Ages, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. My faith is in The Rock of Ages.

So when the storms come…when the wind blows with a fierceness that I’ve never experienced…when the waters rise, even to my neck…I turn to my Rock. I turn to the promise of His Word. As the old hymn writer put it so perfectly: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”

Amen.
