My last post centered on the 1st and greatest commandment, that we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. I posed the question of whether or not any of us do that. I think I should have worded that differently. Obviously, none of us wholly love God. We’re fallen men and women who, saved by grace, are attempting to love God with all we have within us.
So, perhaps a better question would be “What is the general direction of your heart?” Do you seek to serve God? Do you seek to follow His commands, to live for Him? Is He the desire of your heart? Do you try to tune your life into His Word?
If you could have anything in the world, anything at all, do you think of Him?
I point all these questions at myself, and I must say “No, I do not always feel this way.” Many things, some good, some bad, creep into my heart and set themselves up as “god” on the altar of my heart. The key is, when I’m made aware of them, do I depose them and give God back His rightful place? Or do I ignore His demand for supremacy in my life and hold onto my “little gods?”
I will probably never truly love God as I should, this side of eternity, but I can try. I can ask for His help and the grace to put aside myself and to see Him as He is. I can ask for the Spirit to come alongside me and to help me love Him more.
Why do I think this way?
Peter begins his 2nd letter this way:
“His divine power has give to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Pet. 1: 3-4 NKJV)
I believe I can love Him more because His Word tells me He’s given me “all things that pertain to life and godliness.” That surely includes the ability to love Him more fully.
