“Nevertheless, the Lord would not listen to Balaam, but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.” Deut. 23:5
For all those who say that the OT God is not a God of love…take that.
I was reading this chapter today, and that verse really jumped out at me. God, through Moses, is reminding His children of all He has done in bringing them up from Egypt to the verge of Jordan and the Promised Land. In this case He’s reminding them that when their enemies sought to have Balaam the prophet curse them, God turned the curse into a blessing. Not because He wanted to show off, or because He really like, ventriloquism, but “because the Lord your God loves you.”
Do you ever ponder that? I mean really dwell on that Truth? This is no abstract thought. This is no “feel-good mantra.” This is rock-solid, Biblical Truth. How do I know?
“For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16
“Behold what manner of love the Father has lavished upon us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:9-10
These verses are but a sampling of the awesome Truth that is the Love of God. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place, on our behalf…for OUR sins. THAT is love. And it is a love so great that even those who would seek to curse us, in the end, they bless us. Romans 8:28 tells us that “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Even things intended as curses become blessings in the love of God.
