Thoughts from the Sleep Deprived

It’s 3 a.m., and I’ve been home for 24 hours now.  I’m exhausted, but for some reason, I can’t sleep.  So I figured I’d put down some thoughts from our recent trip to Oklahoma for my niece’s wedding.  Here goes:

  • Energy drinks really do work.  I’m not sure what I did to my system by drinking them, but they kept me awake on both our departure and return voyages.  And believe me, at 3 a.m. in Arkansas in a rainstorm, you need all the help you can get.  Did I mention I can’t sleep?
  • Traveling with kids then and now.  Then:  no car seats, so you were free to find the most comfortable position possible (even if your big sis stuck you up in the back window).  Now:  car seats cramp your style, but portable dvd players (thanks Ron!) make a long trip bearable.  Advantage:  then.  You can always play “Punch Bug” to pass the time, right big bro?  But a screaming young one in a car seat makes for a LONG drive.
  • True love is a gift from God.  Seeing my niece and her new husband up close and personal as they made a covenant with each other before God was truly a blessing and an honor.  They obviously love one another deeply, but, more importantly, they love the Lord.  I can’t wait to see what God is going to do in and through them!  It also made me remember just how much I love my wife of nearly 13 years!  Congrats Drew and Court!  Thanks again for letting me play a role in your big day!
  • Oklahoma weather is crazy.  Period.  70 degrees one day.  Tornados the next.  95 degrees and humid with no wind.  95 degrees and actually nice WITH wind.  Crazy.  At least in NC we pretty much know what we’re going to get from May to August:  humidity.  In OK, it’s a crapshoot!
  • Family is also a gift from God.  It was awesome spending time with all my family out there, and great to see my kids playing with and loving on their distant (by miles only) relatives.  Proximity might make it easier to see one another, but it doesn’t mean the love is greater.  Love transcends miles.
  • It’s always good to come home.  Even if it’s 3 a.m. and your eyes are being help open by toothpicks.  To pull up in your driveway after a long journey and sleep in your own bed is one of life’s simple pleasures.  It’s good to be back.  Now, can I please get some sleep?

  1. You drank an Amp? Even I won’t drink an Amp. And you deserve a medal for making that drive with two little ones; I’d have to be institutionalized for a week. Glad you were able to play such a big role in the wedding; pretty special.

  2. Very well-written and coherent post for being sleep deprived. It was a wonderful celebration, and I’m so proud of you. 🙂 Just don’t throw away your notes; I’m sure there will be other nieces and nephews asking for your assistance in the years to come.
